Lahore Airport Closure Announced During Monsoon for Flight Safety – Focus on Bird Strike Prevention

News DeskNews4 months ago13 Views

In a proactive move to ensure passenger and aircraft safety, the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has officially announced a temporary closure of Lahore’s Allama Iqbal International Airport during monsoon season. This strategic decision comes amid growing concerns about the rising threat of bird strikes during wet weather conditions.

From July 10 to September 10, both runways at Lahore airport will remain closed daily from 5:00 am to 8:00 am. These early morning hours are known for increased bird activity, especially during the monsoon months, making this preventive measure both timely and necessary.

Why the Closure Was Necessary – A Closer Look at Bird Strike Risks

Bird strikes have become a persistent threat to aviation safety, particularly during the monsoon season when bird movement increases around waterlogged areas near airports. According to recent data, 61 bird strike incidents affected both local and foreign aircraft in the past year alone. These incidents not only risk passenger safety but also result in millions in damages to aircraft.

The Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has reported 39 bird strike cases at domestic airports in just the last six months, highlighting the urgency of better wildlife management near runways.

To address this, the Civil Aviation Authority has implemented a Wildlife Hazard Management Plan, aiming to minimize bird activity through more stringent environmental and safety protocols at and around airports.

What This Means for Passengers and Airlines

All domestic and international airlines have been officially informed of the change via NOTAM (Notice to Airmen). While regular operations will resume after 8:00 am, emergency landing facilities will remain available during the closure window to ensure passenger safety in urgent situations.

Travelers planning flights during this period are advised to check with their respective airlines for any adjustments in schedules, especially early morning departures or arrivals.

A Responsible Step Forward

By taking this precaution, the CAA shows its commitment to prioritizing passenger safety and aviation reliability during Pakistan’s unpredictable monsoon season. The temporary Lahore airport closure is a necessary step in aligning local aviation protocols with international safety standards.
